Louis Philippe Cup
The Louis Philippe Cup is India’s premier and richest domestic golf tournament where top ranked professionals and amateurs from 8 cities will battle it out for highest honours. The event scheduled to take place between the 5th and 10th of March 2012, at the Karnataka Golf Association is endorsed and sanctioned by the Professional Golf Tour of India (PGTI). This is an important new format innovation in professional golf and could potentially be a game changer in the way fans relate to India’s top golf stars. Professionals would earlier play individually and this tournament now provides an opportunity for them to play in city based teams. The inclusion of amateur players is an integral component of the tournament and is a platform for them to play alongside the top pro golfers. The participating cities are Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, Bangalore, Gurgaon, Lucknow, Chandigarh and the latest inclusion Ahmedabad. The tournament format is based on the extremely popular Alfred Dunhill Cup that was part of the European Tour from 1985 – 2000. Promoted as the “World Team Championships”, this event saw participation from famous players like Tiger Woods, Sergio Garcia, Ernie Els, Greg Norman, Nick Faldo, and Phil Mickelson among others.
The Louis Philippe Cup, commencing on 5th March 2012, will see 24 professional and amateur teams from the 8 participating cities competing in the stroke play format across two days. The city team with the highest combined score of its professional and amateur teams will be declared the winner of the city based amateur tournament.
The top four professional golfers’ teams will then advance to the knock-out semi-final rounds conducted in the match play format on 9th March 2012. To conclude, the two winning teams of the semi-final rounds compete for the coveted winners’ title on 10th March 2012, while the remaining two teams battle it out for the third position.
Prior to the main tournament, 24 teams comprising of one professional and three amateur golfers will compete with for the Celebrity Pro-Am title on 6th March, 2012. A total of 24 professional and 24 amateur golfers are expected to participate in the tournament.
Each of the 8 participating cities is entitled to two teams – a pro golfers’ team and an amateur golfers’ team. The professional team will comprise of 3 highly ranked professional golfers; while the amateur team will consist of 3 amateur golfers who are selected on the basis of their performance in local club qualifiers.
Of the 3 pro team members, 2 members will be selected on the basis of the PGTI 2011 final rankings as of December while the other player will be chosen by the team from a pool of highly talented professional golfers that primarily play overseas and cannot maintain their domestic rankings.
The selection of the 3 amateur golfers will happen through qualifying rounds at independent golf clubs in the 8 participating cities, prior to the commencement of the tournament. The 24 amateurs thus selected, will play for their respective city teams on the first two days of the main championship.
The aim is to establish the Louis Philippe Cup as the most talked about event in the golf industry. Eventually, the inclusion of more cities in the format will lead to an increase in the number of players and corporate support. With the tournament growing bigger in the years to come, an increase in the fan base will lead to more people being encouraged to learn and develop a passion for golf.
